Platinum Star Contests are stupid.

But they are an easy way to win a Something Awful forum account/upgrade or ten bucks! Here is how it works: EOS needs articles. When other articles on EOS link to articles that don't exist, they become "wanted" articles. The "most wanted" list on the main page of EOS details those subjects which have the most articles linking to them. Every month or so, we pick one of these "most wanted" articles and create a Platinum Star Contest by locking that subject down, and creating a "<subject> (contest)" page for it. You, as an entrant, write the funniest, most well-written article you can for the subject at hand, and you create an entrant page as in <subject> (<your nickname>) - and add yourself to a list on the contest page.

So for instance, the first contest was for the Government entry. Government itself was locked down, and a "Government (contest)" page was created. Writers then created their entries for Government and labeled them with their names - ie: "Government (Jazu)" - which they then added to the list on the Government (contest) page. At the end of the contest, a winner is decided and the winner is rewarded with a forum account/upgrade or $10. The final article is an amalgamation of the funniest bits from all submissions. Everybody wins!

As of October 2006, runner-ups are also rewarded with a forum account/upgrade. So write an article already!
