North Dakota is stupid.

North Dakota is a fictitious locale often said to be located within the United States of America. It was originally conceived by fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien, but was rejected in favor of his more realistic setting, Middle-earth. While there are those who believe that North Dakota actually exists, no evidence of its reality has ever surfaced. If it were real, however, it would be ranked 19th in area among US states, and 47th in population.

History

According to Tolkien's original notes, North Dakota was created sometime before 1975, when the territory of Dakota was accidentally split in two. This is an allusion to a real-world event, wherein half of the Dakota territory mysteriously disappeared; it is within this lost half that Tolkien placed North Dakota. The other half, South Dakota, actually does exist, as evidenced by the mostly convincing photographs of Mount Rushmore.

Conspiracy

Several conspiracy theorists have claimed that the government is in fact hiding the existence of North Dakota from the public. This theory is given little credence by most people, however, and the government-run website Snopes.com points out the fact that no state called North Dakota has ever had an impact on US or world history. Also, no American has ever reported receiving mail from North Dakota. These clues point to the conclusion that no such conspiracy exists.
