Language is stupid.
In some countries, there are more than 800 spoken languages. This means about one language for every 3 or 4 families (oh yes! they have real big familiies over there. Don't do the math, you nerdish freak!) Since the main purpose of a language is to communicate, having so many languages isn't actually doing us any good!
Another problem with languages is that even if the two of you speak the same language, there is absolutely no guarantee that you'll be able to communicate. This is mainly due to a phenomenon that is widespread among humans known as stupidity. Recent academic research proved that monkeys have a much better level of communication amongst their groups than any number of humans who natively speak a common language.

At a certain point before 1975 it became essential to have your language written down in a pretty much unreadable book called a dictionary, and children began to be subjected to a certain cruelty called grammar lessons. Up to this point liberty reigned. People spelled words however they wanted (where do you think all these darned languages came from anyway? That crazy Tower of Bable story?). But then, just so they could prove they deserve the honored status of literate nation, they wrote all the words down in a big book and that was the end of it.
Did two words have the same meaning before the great writing down? You're stuck with them now. Was a word impossible to spell? Too bad. If, at that brief and transitory moment, your language happened to be graced with an arcane case structure that made it impossible for anyone older than five to figure it out, tough luck.
So now, we're stuck with it and there's no going back. SMS is a bold effort on the part of people under 30 to break with this historical tyranny. But then they get jobs and the social assimilation slowly erodes the freedom of youth.
